COR-PHYS

After the acute phase of COVID-19, up to 30-40% of all affected people suffer from at least one persistent symptom. Poor physical resilience is one of the most common. This research project aims to comprehensively investigate the long-term consequences of COVID-19 in precisely those people who suffer from persistent symptoms. A particular focus is on physical performance in terms of endurance and muscle strength.

About the project

The project is being carried out by the Division of Sport and Exercise Medicine of the Department of Sport, Exercise and Health at the University of Basel in cooperation with the Barmelweid Clinic, the University Hospital Basel and the Solothurn Clinics. The study was reviewed and approved by the cantonal ethics committee (North-West and Central Switzerland). Using a currently unique approach, COR-PHYS provides detailed insights into the current health status of individuals with persistent symptoms after COVID-19, at least 18 months after hospital discharge and compares them with representative control subjects without symptomatic COVID-19 history. This allows us to link different domains such as lung, cardiovascular, vascular, musculoskeletal, central nervous system, blood parameters, physical activity, sleep as well as psychological components to get a holistic picture of the existing limitations in these patients.
